We believe that Physical Education experienced in a positive, safe and supportive environment is a unique and vital contributor to a student’s holistic development. Physical Education at Adelaide School is about enthusing lifelong participation in sport and physical activity. We aspire to develop students who are; confident about how they move their body, knowledgeable about what being heathy means and can work with others to learn new skills.
The programme of study has been set out in line with meeting the National Curriculum aims of developing competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, being physically active for sustained periods of time, engaging in competitive sports and activities and leading healthy, active lives.
When students join in Key Stage 2 we develop the range and skills and show students how to use skills in different ways, linking them to make actions and sequences of movement. Students experience collaborating, enjoyment and competition further to developing their communication skills. Students develop and understand how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success within these.
In Key Stage 3 we build on and embed physical development and skills learned in Key Stage 2 with students becoming more competent in developing and applying their techniques across different sports and physical activities. Students are encouraged to work as a team, building on trust and developing skills, both individually and as a group. Students engage in competitive sports and activities overcoming opponents in direct competition both in and out of school using a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents. They develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and later on in life.
In Key Stage 4, while the same topic areas are covered as in KS3, there is a greater emphasis on; students developing technique and improving performance, using and develop a variety of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in team and individual games. They will evaluate performances and compare these with previous ones and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities to achieve their personal best. Students study topics discretely and then in conjunction in order to secure a strong understanding and enable them to apply their knowledge to evaluate their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities to achieve their personal best.
Prior to moving into Key Stage 4 pupils meet with teachers and parents to discuss the available Physical Education options and collectively deciding which one meets the individuals needs best. Students can access either the Entry Level award for Physical Education or the Cambridge National Level 2 in Sports Science.
We aim to provide a personalised approach with each lesson effectively differentiated to ensure that all students are given the best chance to achieve and experience success. Furthermore, we offer a number of opportunities for students to access physical activities within the local community. Students in KS2 and KS3 attend swimming lessons on Friday mornings, year 8 students attend gymnastics sessions on Tuesday afternoons and all students have access to trampoline sessions every Thursday afternoon. These take place throughout the academic year along with after school clubs which run every Thursday and access to specific centres which provide Outdoor Adventurous Activities through residential or day visits.
